Madrid, Spain The Spanish Council of Ministers has approved a new anti-smoking law, set to introduce significant restrictions on tobacco consumption across the country. The legislation, detailed by legal expert Xavi Abat, aims to curb smoking in public spaces and reduce tobacco-related fatalities. Key provisions of the new law include a ban on smoking in outdoor areas such as terraces of bars and restaurants, as well as in parks, schools, and any open spaces frequented by minors. Furthermore, the new regulations will extend to electronic cigarettes (vapes) and heated tobacco products, which will now be subject to the same restrictions as conventional tobacco. While specific fines are yet to be officially published, Mr. Abat informed viewers that penalties for non-compliance could reach up to 600. The concept of plain packaging for tobacco products, similar to measures implemented in countries like Australia and Ireland, was discussed but has not yet been approved, though it remains a potential future measure. The lawyer underscored the public health rationale behind the law, citing alarming statistics: Spain currently has eight million smokers, and between 50,000 and 60,000 people die annually due to tobacco-related illnesses. The government hopes these new measures will significantly reduce these figures. The public is encouraged to share their views on the new legislation.
