Gardeners are increasingly turning to sustainable practices, and companion planting is gaining renewed interest for its ecological benefits and efficiency. A recent video from gardening enthusiast Laura of the Young Growers Club highlights an effective companion planting strategy: intercropping broccoli with broad beans. According to Laura, who is RHS qualified, this method leverages the natural symbiotic relationship between these plants. "This is my broad bean bed, and in it, I'm going to be planting my broccoli," she explains, demonstrating the simple technique. Broad beans are known to improve soil health by fixing nitrogen, a crucial nutrient that brassicas like broccoli require in abundance. "Broad beans improve soil health and provide nitrogen, which brassicas will love," Laura states. The video illustrates how tiny broccoli seedlings are planted alongside more mature broad bean plants. This approach ensures that by the time the broad beans are harvested, the broccoli will have ample space and a nutrient-rich environment to grow to full size, optimizing garden productivity and soil vitality.
