Viral Dumpster Diver Accused of Theft by TJ Maxx on Public Flyer

Retailer Takes Unusual Step Against Dumpster Diver After Viral Video A recent incident involving a viral social media video and a major retail chain has sparked discussion about waste, property rights, and corporate response. Zul Rodriguez, a social media content creator, shared a "storytime" video detailing her encounter with TJ Maxx and local police following her participation in dumpster diving. Rodriguez recounted that she and a cousin engaged in dumpster diving at a TJ Maxx location, discovering several new items. She subsequently posted a video of her findings, which quickly gained traction online. "It was all for funsies, I was just bored," Rodriguez stated in her video, explaining the motivation behind her actions. According to Rodriguez, the police contacted her the day after her initial dumpster diving video went viral. She quoted the officers as saying, "You're not in trouble or anything, but this is a warning, so don't go back there or TJ Maxx will probably want to press charges." Rodriguez complied, stating she would not return to dumpster dive at that specific location. However, the situation escalated further when Rodriguez received a direct message from a follower a week later. The message included a photo of a flyer posted on the TJ Maxx dumpster. The flyer prominently displayed Rodriguez's name and email address, along with a message stating, "Nampa PD has some questions for you regarding theft from a dumpster on private property, please call them at [phone number]." Rodriguez expressed surprise at the extreme measure, noting that her name had been on the dumpster for over a week without her knowledge. She concluded her storytime by stating she would no longer be posting dumpster diving videos from that location, acknowledging the end of her "fun" activity. This incident raises questions about the definition of theft concerning discarded items and the appropriate response from businesses to such activities, especially when amplified by social media.
