Malaysia's PERKESO Saves RM49 Million in Social Security Fund Through Fraud Investigation
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a significant development in the fight against social security fraud, the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) has announced the successful recovery of nearly RM49 million since 2020. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong revealed this figure, highlighting the organization's proactive approach to tackling fraudulent benefit claims. PERKESO's investigations, conducted up to April 2025, uncovered 679 cases involving fraudulent elements. A substantial portion of these cases, 383 (or 56.5%), have resulted in the suspension of benefits, preventing further losses to the social security fund. Minister Sim emphasized the persistent challenge of benefit fraud, stating, "Fraudulent benefit claims, regardless of their nature, remain a significant hurdle." He also noted that RM21 million in losses were recorded throughout 2024, primarily due to invalid claims. PERKESO's efforts extend beyond investigation and suspension. The organization has also proactively reviewed 590 cases of Employment Insurance System (EIS) benefits, leading to the suspension of 117 (22.9%) cases. These measures underscore PERKESO's commitment to safeguarding social security funds for the long term. The minister's statement underscores the government's determination to protect public funds and ensure the integrity of the social security system.
