New York City – September 19, 2025 – Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 17 models have just hit retail stores worldwide, but early adopters are already reporting significant cosmetic issues. Shoppers eager to purchase the new devices on Friday discovered that some units, particularly the deep blue Pro and black Air versions, were exhibiting scratches straight out of the box.Bloomberg News's Mark Gurman elaborated on the situation, stating, "If you're someone who doesn't want to see their new iPhone get scratched up, you may want to use a case or reconsider getting the deep blue versions of the 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, and the black version of the 17 Air." He explained that these darker models appear to be more susceptible to scratching compared to lighter colors like gold, blue, and white versions of the Air, and the orange version of the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.In addition to the scratching, users have quickly discovered another issue: the MagSafe wireless charging puck can leave discernible marks on the back of the darker-colored iPhones, especially after prolonged charging. Gurman attributes these problems to a significant material change in the Pro and Pro Max models this year. "The issue is prevalent because Apple moved to an anodized aluminum shell on the Pro and Pro Max this year, moving back from titanium," he noted. This shift in material could be a key factor contributing to the observed durability concerns with the new iPhone 17 models.
