London, UK – Dr. Amir Khan, a General Practitioner, recently highlighted five common daily habits that could be contributing to premature brain aging. In a recent video, Dr. Khan detailed how seemingly innocuous routines can have significant impacts on cognitive health. According to Dr. Khan, constant multitasking, often perceived as productivity, actually stresses the brain, potentially weakening short-term memory and increasing cortisol levels. He also pointed to chronic sleep deprivation, emphasizing that even one bad night's sleep affects memory and attention. Long-term lack of deep sleep, he explained, can hinder the brain's waste disposal system, increasing plaque formation linked to Alzheimer's dementia. Another habit identified was 'doom scrolling,' where hours of passive scrolling overstimulate the brain, trigger stress responses, and reduce dopamine sensitivity, thereby affecting memory and mood. Dr. Khan also advised against skipping meals, especially breakfast, as glucose is the brain's primary fuel. He noted that frequent meal skipping can reduce concentration and trigger 'brain fog,' particularly in individuals with busy lives or hormonal fluctuations. Finally, Dr. Khan underscored the importance of social contact, stating that social interaction is protective for brain health. He cited studies indicating that loneliness can be as detrimental to cognitive health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and that socializing boosts cognitive reserve and reduces dementia risk.
