Powerful Earthquake Shakes Northern Chile, Leaving Thousands Without Power
A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Atacama region of northern Chile on Friday, June 6th, 2025, at approximately 65 kilometers deep and 54 kilometers south of Diego de Almagro. While initial reports from authorities indicated no casualties or significant damage, videos circulating on social media show considerable destruction to buildings and infrastructure in several areas. One resident, whose home suffered damage, stated, "It was terrifying. The shaking was so intense, I thought the house would collapse." The Superintendency of Electricity confirmed that 29,879 customers remained without power in the Atacama region following the quake. Despite the widespread power outages and structural damage, the resilience of the community and the absence of reported injuries offer a glimmer of hope amidst the destruction. Emergency services are working diligently to restore power and assess the full extent of the damage.
