Odd-Even Scheme to Replace Number Coding on EDSA During Rebuilding
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recently announced a significant change to the traffic management system on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfares. Starting June 16th, the MMDA will implement an odd-even number plate scheme as a temporary measure during the planned rebuilding of EDSA. MMDA Chairman Romando Artes explained the decision, stating, "The odd-even scheme will replace the current number coding scheme on EDSA during its rebuilding." This decision follows public feedback indicating that the existing system was causing significant inconvenience to motorists. The odd-even scheme will be in effect on EDSA only; other roads will continue to use the standard number coding system. To ensure a smooth transition, a one-month dry run will begin on June 16th. The MMDA is also considering implementing "window hours," allowing unrestricted travel during specific times, likely between 10 PM and 5 AM. This measure aims to alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate the planned free use of the Skyway by July. Chairman Artes further clarified that simply crossing EDSA during the odd-even scheme will not be considered a violation. Exemptions will remain for hybrid and electric vehicles, motorcycles, and those with pre-existing exemptions. The MMDA's proactive approach to managing traffic during the EDSA rebuilding project shows a commitment to mitigating disruption for commuters and motorists.
