EDSA Rebuild: Philippines Prepares for Massive Traffic Changes
EDSA Rebuild: Philippines Implements Traffic Mitigation Plan Ahead of June 13th Project Launch The Philippines is preparing for the major EDSA rebuild project, set to begin on June 13th. To mitigate the anticipated traffic disruption, the government has rolled out a multi-pronged approach. This includes a free toll on sections of Skyway Stage 3 and an odd-even number coding scheme for vehicles on EDSA. News5's Gerard De La Peña reported live from EDSA Guadalupe on the first day of implementation, noting that "over 500 motorists were apprehended for violating the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP)". The odd-even scheme restricts vehicles with license plates ending in odd numbers from using EDSA on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; even-numbered plates are restricted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. De La Peña further explained that the free toll on Skyway Stage 3, along with increased bus and MRT services, are intended to provide commuters with alternative routes. Despite these measures, the initial day saw significant traffic congestion, as evidenced by the high number of NCAP violations. The MMDA has announced a one-week dry run for the scheme, starting June 6th, before the full implementation on June 13th. While penalties are not yet being enforced, the MMDA is preparing to send notices via registered mail to those who have violated the rules. The MMDA is also working towards a cashless payment system for future violations. The EDSA project is expected to last until 2027. The government's efforts to manage traffic during this period are crucial for maintaining the smooth flow of transportation and minimizing inconvenience to commuters and motorists alike.
