Madrid, Spain – As of April 1, 2025, a new measure in Spain, the Complemento de Apoyo al Empleo (CAE), allows individuals to combine unemployment benefits with employment. This initiative aims to facilitate the reinsertion of job seekers into the labor market without immediate loss of financial support from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE). Under the new regulation, beneficiaries of the contributory unemployment benefit can work for an employer while continuing to receive a portion of their unemployment payment. Key requirements include having received at least nine months of unemployment benefits, with the benefit period recognized for a minimum of 14 months. Additionally, the gross monthly salary from the new employment must not exceed 225% of the IPREM (Public Multiple Effect Income Indicator), which translates to 1,350 euros. The CAE has a maximum duration of 180 days. The amount received varies based on the elapsed time and the type of work schedule. For instance, full-time workers will receive 80% of the IPREM (480 euros) during the first three months, with the amount progressively decreasing thereafter. For part-time employment, the percentage will be adjusted proportionally to the hours worked. Exceptions apply, such as when the employer has an active employment regulation file or is a direct family member.
