Subcontractor Fatally Falls at Penang Construction Site; DOSH Investigation Underway
A subcontractor tragically lost his life on June 5th, 2025, after falling approximately 27 meters at a construction site in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. The incident occurred around 10:30 AM during work on a new apartment complex. The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang immediately launched an investigation. Initial findings indicate that safety measures were inadequate; the hole where the worker fell was merely covered with plywood and a flimsy barrier. According to a DOSH spokesperson, "The initial investigation revealed that the area was not adequately secured, resulting in this tragic accident." Three stop-work orders have been issued to the main contractor to ensure comprehensive safety improvements. The investigation continues, and legal action under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 may follow if violations are found. This emphasizes the importance of stringent safety protocols in construction to prevent future tragedies.
