Santa Cruz, Bolivia – Residents of Santa Cruz are facing increased costs for staple vegetables as low temperatures and recent frosts have driven up prices at local markets. A report from the Abasto Minorista market reveals significant hikes in the cost of tomatoes, peas, and beans. According to a market vendor interviewed by Red Uno, the price of tomatoes has risen from 4 to 5 Bolivianos per kilogram. "Comparing to last week, tomatoes have gone up. We are now selling them at 5 Bolivianos per kilo, what we were selling at 3 Bolivianos," the vendor stated. She attributed the increase to the cold weather, which is hindering the ripening process of the produce, causing them to arrive green. Peas and beans have also seen a notable increase. Three pounds of peas are now priced at 20 Bolivianos, up from 15 Bolivianos, while three pounds of beans, previously 10 Bolivianos, are now 15 Bolivianos. The vendor confirmed that these increases are directly linked to the frosts. Conversely, prices for carrots and bell peppers have remained stable. Carrots are still being sold at 7 Bolivianos for three pounds, and bell peppers range from 15 to 8 Bolivianos per dozen, depending on size. These updated prices reflect the current impact of weather on the family food basket.
