Bolivian Energy Crisis: Analyst Calls for Drastic Measures and Accountability

LA PAZ, Bolivia – Energy analyst Álvaro Ríos has warned that Bolivia's next government will face the challenging task of implementing tough measures to address the country's deepening energy crisis and restructure the state-owned oil company, YPFB. Ríos's comments follow recent statements from the presidency, which he notes finally acknowledge the crisis after months of prior warnings. "The economic management has been disastrous," Ríos stated, criticizing the current administration. He highlighted that the president, who served as an economic minister for nearly two decades and has been president for five years, appears unwilling to accept responsibility for the current fuel shortages and the lack of sufficient foreign currency to import necessary supplies. Ríos emphasized that experts in the energy sector had foreseen the dollar and fuel shortages years ago. He expressed disappointment that the president has not offered an apology to the Bolivian people for the ongoing situation. The analyst urged the current government to focus on practical solutions rather than political rhetoric. "The president should do his work silently, guarantee supply to the country, and say, 'I will work'," Ríos asserted. He stressed that it is the government's responsibility to maintain a stable fuel supply until the end of its term in November. The crisis has led to visible impacts, including long queues at gas stations, as depicted in recent footage of fuel trucks and vehicles awaiting service. This situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to stabilize Bolivia's energy sector and ensure long-term economic stability.
