From Ireland to the Canary Islands: The Amazing Rescue of Sea Turtle Solsticio
A green sea turtle named Solsticio embarked on an extraordinary journey from the brink of death to freedom. Found severely ill on the west coast of Ireland on Christmas Eve, Solsticio was suffering from pneumonia and multiple bite wounds. After six months of intensive care by an international team of specialists, Solsticio was transported to Gran Canaria. Pascual Calabug, Director of the Wildlife Recovery Center of Cabildo de GC, described the turtle's recovery as 'a precious thing' and expressed hope for its return to its migratory route. The release took place on Melenara beach in Telde, where a team from the Irish Ocean World Aquarium, who had cared for Solsticio, were present to witness the emotional moment. One of the team members shared, "Our team did a great job." This successful rescue and release highlight the power of international collaboration in wildlife conservation.
