London, UK – Runner Emily Georgia, known as 'runswithemily' online, has revealed an unconventional strategy that helped her achieve personal bests in both 10K and half marathon races: walking more. In a recent video, Georgia shared how integrating walking intervals into her runs significantly improved her performance and overall running experience. Georgia explained that she adopted a 'run-walk' approach, specifically a ratio of three minutes of running followed by one minute of walking. Her running pace averaged around 6:40 per kilometer, while her walking pace was approximately 9:30 per kilometer. "I used to think I had to run as much of the distance as possible, but after doing this, my mindset has totally shifted," Georgia stated. She noted that this method was not only easier on her body but also kept her mentally engaged by breaking down the race into manageable chunks. To determine her optimal run-walk ratio, Georgia utilized a free online tool, mypacecalculator.com/runwalk.html. She encouraged other runners to experiment with the calculator and different ratios to find what best suits their individual needs and fitness levels. "It's a bit of trial and error, but I've really seen the benefits of incorporating more run-walks into my training and also into races as well," she added.
