Unveiling the Sweet Secrets: Kwik Trip's Massive Midwest Production Empire

LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN – Kwik Trip, a staple in the Midwest, is known for its convenience and fresh offerings. A recent report by TMJ4 News provided an exclusive glimpse into the company's sprawling production facility in La Crosse, Wisconsin, revealing the impressive scale and dedication behind its popular products, including the iconic Glazers donuts, freshly baked bread, and dairy items. The journey of the beloved Glazers donut began in 2003 with a challenge from management to create a Krispy Kreme-esque product. Dan Walters, Bakery R&D Manager, recounted the extensive development process. "There was a lot of experimentation, a lot of trial and error," Walters stated, noting it took about a year to perfect the recipe. The team, working third shifts, tirelessly tested different ingredients and recipes, even loading up the employee breakroom for feedback until they achieved the perfect taste and texture. The most challenging aspect, according to Walters, was ensuring the glaze adhered properly to the pastry. Today, the Glazers assembly line is a marvel of efficiency, capable of producing over 400 donuts per minute, equating to an astounding 45 million Glazers annually – enough to stretch across the United States from coast to coast. Beyond donuts, the La Crosse bakery also churns out an incredible volume of other baked goods. The facility produces 1,600 buns and 225 loaves of bread every minute, following a similar automated path from dough mixing and cutting to baking and packaging. These products are then transported to Kwik Trip's more than 860 stores, with a "no human zone" for stacking packaged items by robots. The dairy operation at Kwik Trip is equally impressive. After manufacturing their own plastic jugs, the facility fills them with milk at a rate of 105 gallons per minute. Al Bollinger, the Ice Cream Supervisor, oversees the production of up to 8,000 gallons of ice cream daily. Bollinger, affectionately known as "the sweetest man on campus," shared his job perks: "Oh yes. It's a good thing," he said about tasting the ice cream. He also revealed that despite the variety of flavors produced, vanilla remains the most popular, "because it goes with everything." The video highlighted the unique custard consistency of the ice cream before it is flash-frozen for distribution. This behind-the-scenes look underscores Kwik Trip's commitment to large-scale, efficient production, ensuring fresh, high-quality products are consistently available to its wide customer base across the Midwest.
