AREQUIPA, Peru – The Sabancaya volcano, located in the Arequipa region of Peru, has been placed on an orange alert level following a significant increase in its eruptive activity, as confirmed by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). This escalation signals a heightened risk and calls for increased vigilance among local communities.According to reports from the IGP, the volcano recently registered a fumarole that soared over 5,000 meters in height. This substantial emission was accompanied by a dispersion of ash, multiple explosions, and pyroclastic flows, indicating a robust and active phase. Consequently, an alert for ash dispersion has been issued for the districts of Huambo, Huanca, and several other nearby populated centers, prompting concerns for public health and safety in these areas. The National Volcanological Center further clarified the implications of the orange alert. It signifies a noticeable increase in seismic activity, a higher frequency of volcanic explosions, and a greater emission of ash. Authorities emphasized that continuous monitoring of Sabancaya, which is recognized as the second most active volcano in Peru, is being maintained around the clock to assess and respond to any further developments. The situation underscores the ongoing natural hazards in the region and the importance of preparedness for potential emergencies.
