Madrid, Spain – A new Animal Welfare Law, effective September 29th, has introduced significant changes for pet owners across Spain, including substantial fines for non-compliance. The legislation prohibits the ownership of certain animal species, such as specific rodents, exotic reptiles, and some bird species, as domestic pets. Under the new law, individuals found in possession of these newly prohibited animals without proper authorization could face fines of up to 200,000 euros and the confiscation of their pets. Owners who currently possess animals now deemed prohibited must apply for authorization from the competent authorities within six months of the law's enforcement. This authorization, if granted, will allow them to retain their pets for the remainder of the animal's life, provided they meet specific conditions.
