Moldova Recalculates Poverty Rate Amidst Official Dispute
Moldova's Poverty Statistics Revised: A Controversy Sparks Debate Moldova's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently recalculated its poverty level, sparking a heated debate. The initial study, which showed a significant rise in poverty, was heavily criticized by the Minister of Labor, Alexei Buzu. The NBS, however, maintains its methodology was sound and the new figures reflect a lower poverty rate. "The previous study used an outdated methodology," stated Oleg Cara, director of the NBS, in a recent press conference. "Our revised figures are in strict accordance with internationally recognized standards." The video shows stark contrasts between urban and rural poverty. While the overall poverty rate is lower than initially reported, the situation in rural areas remains dire. Images depict dilapidated houses and impoverished living conditions. Buzu, however, remains unconvinced, arguing that the government's aid packages haven't effectively reduced poverty. The discrepancy in data highlights the challenges in accurately measuring poverty and the ongoing need for effective social programs in Moldova.
