Mercado stated that the adverse weather conditions, including low visibility and extreme cold, necessitated the closure of this vital trade route. "Close to 2,000 units are stopped," Mercado reported. "Every day, around 300 trucks pass through this sector, through this border. This is accumulating day by day." The prolonged halt in operations is causing substantial financial losses for both Bolivian exporters and importers. Key products affected include minerals, meat, cereals, and wood, which rely on this route for international transport. While alternative routes like Pisiga are being utilized, they are not sufficient to handle the volume of traffic typically seen at Tambo Quemado. Chilean authorities initiated the transit suspension, and the measure will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and the road is deemed safe for passage. Transporters are urging customs authorities to facilitate smoother processes once the border reopens to mitigate further economic repercussions.
